Get to know Cheri

Cheri Rol was born and raised in Culver City, Calif., on the other side of the fence from MGM Studios (now Sony). To say the least, creativity abounded in this neighborhood. Movies were filmed on the streets, surrounding her home. This led a person to believe that anything is possible…a tree can be pink, an ant can be six feet tall, the kids could be shrunk, flubber is available at the local five and dime, Goofy lives with Mickey and Minnie in a castle and whatever else you can imagine!

Cheri has been raised with art from the very beginning of time. Her family was into performing and visual arts and encouraged all its members to create music, paintings, sewing fiber arts, crafts, textiles, etc. She attended Lutheran grade school and was blessed to have Mr. Siemers’ teaching perspective, light source and basic shapes, every Friday for two years of 7th and 8th grades. In Lutheran High School she had three years of art with Gerald Brommer, world-renowned watercolorist. After Lutheran High School she went on to college to get an education major with a minor in art at Concordia Teachers College in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. After living in Oregon, Illinois and Canada she moved to Nebraska where she found Decorative Painting. It was the perfect avenue to combine her teaching skills with her love of art.

This created a certain balance in her thinking, which appreciates the structure and orderly approach of the Old Masters and Decorative Art, while never disallowing the possibilities of the imagination.

Cheri found Decorative Painting and the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP) in the early ’70s. This combined her love of teaching with her love of many different art forms. In 1997 Cheri earned her Master Decorative Artist (MDA) from the SDP. In 2017, she was awarded the Exceptional contributions artist “Silver Palette.”

Cheri keeps a busy schedule at her home studio, The Golden Paint Brush, located next to her house out in the country near Corydon, Ind. She travel-teaches for individuals, studios and painting groups across the United States, Canada, Japan, Argentina and Colombia. You can check out her schedules on her website rolstudio.com.

Her students and her work are the proof of the pudding. The students travel from far and wide to attend classes. They call themselves “groupies.” Her kind manner and easy painting style puts students of all levels at ease.

When living in Nebraska, Cheri had lot of resources for and painted many landscapes. Since then with study from many well-known artists and lots of hands-on work, Cheri has refined her art to realistic and photorealism. This is what is intriguing her right now. Her work hangs in many private collections and in the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Neb. (Stuhr Museum sells limited edition prints of Cheri’s pieces). Binney & Smith has purchased a piece of her work that is now in their corporate art collection. When not involved in art, Cheri keeps busy with her most prized inspirations – her children, grandchildren and now the great-grandchildren.  After living 18 years in California near Yosemite National Park, Cheri and her husband Larry have moved back to the Midwest. Eight acres of southern Indiana, just outside of Louisville, Ky., are now home. Cheri continues to travel and teach, but the peace and quiet of her new home is tempting her to slow down and enjoy. The deer, the cardinals, the flowers and – someday, hopefully – a pasture full of sheep.

Thanks go to her husband Larry for making her studio a reality, a peaceful place to paint, laugh, enjoy students. Let the creative juices flow.

Creativity & Inspiration are around every corner ….. Keep your eyes open!!

She hopes you will find time to join her in Indiana for R & R & P.
